Cultural tourism: Tourists meeting the culture of the North

Tourism is a rapidly growing industry which may have far-reaching economic and environmental impact in the Arctic. Having focused on natural wonders and nature-based tourism in international marketing, there is a growing awareness of cultural tourism as a vital part of the experience. Going forward, leveraging the unique Arctic culture in marketing campaigns represents a potential for sustainable growth, provided it is executed with insight and respect of the Arctic culture. Positioning the Arctic as a unique experience in terms of both nature and culture can thus provide a platform for increased understanding and respect for local and indigenous societies in the North.
